Wedding Favors: An Essential Part Of Any Wedding

Wedding favors are the small gifts given to guests who attend your wedding. They tend to be items guests can take home with them and serve both as a reminder of your special day as well as way of thanking them for attending and celebrating with you.

With the incredible costs associated with weddings these days, it’s no wonder many couples choose to hold back on the expense of wedding favors or at the very least leave the planning of what to give the guests until the last minute. And, what with all the tiny details requiring attention when arranging a wedding ceremony, who can blame them.

There is however a school of thought which suggests no small task is too important when it comes to your special day. For most couples, a wedding day will only take place once and so the need for perfection in everything is paramount.

So then it goes without saying that a seemingly trivial item on your to do list such as wedding favors should take careful planning.

The history and tradition of wedding favors

At the risk of loosing an audience at this point, it is interesting and appropriate to quickly take a look at where the idea of giving gifts to guests at a wedding came from.

It is believed the tradition was common among European aristocrats who provided guests with a small trinket box, which contained sugar cubes or confection, at a time when sugar was an expensive commodity. The gift symbolized wealth and royalty. Centuries later, almonds replaced sugar as a passing on of good wishes to the bridegroom’s new life. Today this same tradition is shared in cultures all over the world.

Bearing this little history lesson in mind, taking careful consideration of what wedding favors you will provide your guests takes on a whole new meaning.

3 perfect reasons for finding the ideal wedding favors

Symbolism

Although most, if not all of your guests may miss the symbolism of wealth and royalty when it comes to the wedding favors they receive, they will notice the appearance of expense and effort. There are countless ways to spare enormous expense with these gifts but still provide something your family and friends will want to keep as a significant reminder of your wedding day.

Ambiance

Wedding favors can be used to enhance the atmosphere of your reception by the placement of them as part of the decoration as well as playing a part in the festivities. While the latter may take a little more thought and planning, the presenting of the wedding favors could be a ceremony of its own.

When it comes to deciding on centerpieces, the cake, invitations, flowers, music and every other detail, wedding favors can play an important role when it comes to the look and feel of your wedding. As always, it’s the little things that count.

Sincerity

Wedding favors are a way of thanking the people who celebrated in your dream day and this thank you should come from the heart. Just remember though, expensive gifts do not always come across as sincere.

There are literally thousand of wedding favors to choose from these days. Choose carefully and plan accordingly because you will only get to do this once.

Elegant, inexpensive and a wide range of wedding favors are only a click away – Wedding Planning Bliss

The Great Awakening

THE GREAT AWAKENING

The heavy down pour had just stopped but it was still drizzling lightly outside. My six-year-old sister was humming one of the new rhymes she had learnt in school that day, and the monotony of the song was beginning to irritate me.

I did not want to comment. Doing so would only led to a fight. Of course I would win, but she would have the last laugh as my parents would always take her side and rebuke me for being inconsiderate.

“For heaven’s sake, she is five years younger than you!” they would always say.

What I did not quite understand was why they never told my sister that I was five years older than her and so she should respect me and give me the peace that I want.

I stared wide-eyed into the blackness of our bedroom. I could not find sleep. Not with my sister singing the same song over and over right under my ears. It was so nauseating. I tossed and turned, trying hard to ignore her. I could not, she was unbearable.

I needed my own room. I had told my mother on several occasions but she just would not hear of it. I wanted my own space. A place away from my sister’s interference.

Anytime I mentioned that I wanted to have a room of my own, she would narrate to me how they- all the nine sisters – had shared a room smaller than ours. They had all slept huddled in hard papyrus mats, and they had never even thought of complaining.

I was tired of listening to the same old story. Those were their days. Times had changed. I wanted to be like my other friends. I wanted to have a huge room with a big music system and a television. I wanted a room with clothes full of trendy clothes.

My father had promised that we would move to a larger house where I would have my own room, but that would only come after six years. Six years of waiting! Six unbearable years of sharing a room with my sister. Six long years of being different from my friends. It seemed so far.

“ Give me a pie, give me cake…” my sister’s shrill voice droned on. She was starting the song over for the eighty ninth time!

I placed a pillow on my head and let my mind wader. I imagined myself in a beautifully decorated room, listening to loud rock music. It was so much fun. My friends were flipping through cool fashion magazines and we were all admiring the fabulous dresses the fashion idols were wearing. Some of my friends were checking out the new clothes that were sprawled all over my bed.

My thoughts were interrupted by my sister calling me. There was urgency in her voice. I rolled my eyes. It was so like her to remove me from my fantasy world just to ask me her kiddish questions.

“Mercy, did you hear that noise?’ she whispered.

I did not respond. I knew it was one of her many tricks. I was tired of them- fed up!

She started shaking me vigorously. My patience was running out.

“What is the matter with you Judy?” I whispered back.

“There is somebody moving outside. I have heard some movements,” she replied, alarmed.

I remained silent, and tried to listen. There was nothing. I felt intense anger and hatred towards my sister rise up within me. These feelings flashed through me till I felt my breathing being laboured. I slapped her hard across the face. I

Slapped her again. And again. My body shook in rage.

She did not yell as expected of her. She just let a low moan and sobbed silently. I covered my ears and turned to face the wall. I felt my tears flow.

Then-I heard it. Somebody was coughing outside. The sound came from right next to the bedroom window.

Stealthly, I tiptoed towards the window and parted the curtains. I peered outside but I did not see anything. There was deep darkness outside. For a timeless moment, I stood staring outside, hoping to see the cause of the noise, but there was nothing.

I went back to bed. Lying on my back, several thoughts crossed my mind. Maybe it was someone waiting for the night to close in so that he attacks.

I heard a muffled cough. I became alarmed.

“Daddy, Dad!” I called out. I got no response.

My sister was still sobbing. I looked at her but said nothing.

“Daddy!” I tried again, increasing my volume.

“Mercy, I hope you are not waking us up to convince us that you need your own room, your eight aunts and I shared an even smaller room when we were much older than you…” came my mother’s voice.

I knew the story word by word. I had heard it ever since my sister was born. It was so boring. I particularly hated the part where they would fight for one blanket-the nine of them! It got even worse when my aunts came visiting. They would gladly show me the scars they got from fighting for the blanket.

“Mum, it is not that. Somebody is walking outside.” I stuttered.

I heard my father saying that my obsession with having my own room was beginning to affect me psychologically and that something should be done. My mother suggested boarding school and then they both came to our room.

“Have you two been fighting again?” asked my mother, holding my sister’s hand.

“It is Mercy who started it all,” said my sister.

I did not want to start an argument. There was somebody walking around our house and I thought it was more important than knowing who started the fight.

“There is somebody outside”, I interrupted.

Nobody was listening to me. My parents were busy fussing over my sister as usual. I threw myself on my bed just as my father began to lecture me on how I should respect the age difference between my sister and I.

As they were leaving the room, they were startled to hear muffled sounds of someone crying outside.

My father rushed to his room to get a torch. My mother reached for the whistle. They instructed us to lock our door and stay still and then hurried outside.

I was scared. I stayed huddled in the corner of my bed.

After about ten minutes, I heard my mother rapping on our bedroom window.

“Get me methylated spirit,” she ordered.

Barefoot, I rushed outside with the methylated spirit. My sister was following me from a distance.

I strained my eyes to adjust them to the darkness. I was surprised to see my mother squatting next to a young girl who was shaking from the impact of the night’s cold.

Her body was bruised and blood was oozing from her temple. My mother wiped her bruises gently and time and again, she winced in pain, but she did not cry.

“What is your name,” my father asked. Silence. She did not reply. Her gaze remained on the ground.

“Where are your parents little one?” my mother inquired, stroking the girl’s therwise shaggy hair.

“I have no parents Ma’am,” she answered weakly. A cold wind blew my face. There was deep nocturnal silence. I felt a sharp pain on my stomach.

“And where do you stay Sweety?’ my mother broke the silence. Her eyes searched my mother’s face.

“ I have no home. I stay in the bus park, but today the big boys sent me away. They want my marble.” She replied. Tears streamed her face. Her fist was clenched tightly.

“Do not send me away. Let me shelter from the rain outside here. I swear I will not steal anything.” She said amidst sobs.

My eyes moistened. I felt the need to be close to somebody. I held my sister’s hand and squeezed it tightly.

My mother helped the little girl rise from her sitting position. Her blue dress was tattered and I noticed that her hair was longer than mine, only that hers had not been combed.

When we reached the house, my father gave her maandazi and milk. She ate greedily as we watched.

“What is your name,” my father asked again.

“ I am Kelyn,” she whispered. Her face remained expressionless and she stared blankly at the wall hangings in our dining room.

I saw her rugged marble. She was holding it tightly in her right hand. Her face was pale, but she was pretty. Her blue dress must also have been very nice when it was new.

“Kelyn, come let us go to bed. Our room is very big…” I found myself saying.

My parents looked at me in surprise. My father held my shoulders, my mother held my hand, and kelyn smiled. Yes, she did. She had the sweetest smile I had ever seen. Her neatly arranged teeth had a gap in front.

That night as I lay on my bed, I cried. They were not the first tears I was shedding in that room, but they were the first ones I was shedding for my selfishness.

I realized that I had been thinking about myself and crying for a bigger room, yet there were children out there, children younger than myself who were crying for a room, regardless of the size.

I looked at kelyn. She was deep asleep. Maybe it was the first time she was sleeping on a bed. I was greatly challenged.

In the morning when I woke up, my mother informed us that Kelyn was being taken to an institution that caters for children like her. I did not question her.

That was the last I saw of Kelyn, but her face stayed in my memory to this day. It is engraved in my mind.

Kelyn changed me overnight. I ceased complaining bout the small room. I had received the great awakening. I started seeing our room as a very big room. It was too big for just the two of us.

I could not believe it. So much had happened in such a short time- I had changed so quickly. And the changed had happened within me.

“Your room is nice,” Kelyn had said to me when we were having breakfast. Her words had meaning, and so did the smile she wore when she said them.

I watched as my parents took her with them. She waved at my sister and I, till they disappeared from our vicinity.

I went to our room and found her marble on the bed she had slept on. I kept it to this day- a part of Kelyn had remained in our room.

I had learnt a lesson from a girl younger than myself. Everybody commended my new self. Never shall I forget Kelyn. Never shall I forget that night which changed me for all eternity, and taught me how to appreciate things. Never shall I forget. Never!

Hawaiian Wedding Themes

Choosing a wedding theme that reflects both the personalities of a bride and groom can be the first of many wedding planning decisions that create division amongst a couple. When one person would like a relaxed ambiance and the other would like classic and elegant, meeting half-way can seem impossible. Hawaiian wedding themes can be just the right answer. Choosing beautiful tropical Hawaiian blooms and authentic dining and entertainment are just the start of the many ways to plan Hawaiian wedding themes.

Creating a Hawaiian Ambiance

While a beach wedding location might be the perfect place for Hawaiian wedding themes, it isn’t always possible depending on the timing and the actual venue of your event. However, with a few special touches, you can create a Hawaiian escape for you as well as your guests. As your guests arrive, you can have the groomsmen and bridesmaids provide a traditional Hawaiian greeting of lei’s made from fresh flowers or from paper flowers in coordinating colors.

Your color palette and lighting can be additional ways to create your Hawaiian theme. There are bright pinks, purples and yellows along with many shades of green to use throughout your flowers and fabrics. Using white candles inside hurricane lamps with sand and small shells or even using floating candles in water colored to remind guests of ocean blues is another way to continue your Hawaiian themes. Depending on your wedding site or reception location, you may even consider using tiki torches for lighting.

Unique Hawaiian Decorations and Entertainment

Depending on the style of your Hawaiian wedding theme, you have many ways to represent the culture with your own personality. You could consider having a wedding cake in the shape of a volcano, complete with hot lava colored icing. The many types of tropical Hawaiian fruit can also be used as centerpieces, table gifts for your guests or used in beautiful floral arrangements. There are many food artists who actually carve fruit into flowers, animals or anything you can probably imagine. You can feature fruit in floral arrangements as well.

Your guests may be expecting a luau for a reception with a typical buffet of fresh fruits, roasted pig and of course tropical drinks. What they might not expect is Hawaiian entertainment, such as live musicians, hula dancers or Polynesian dancers who can perform a traditional high energy dance. Dancers trained to use fire in their performances may also be an option depending on the policies of your reception site. You could also consider taking Hawaiian dance lessons to wow your guests with your culturally inspired first dance.

When you think you have to choose between elegant and relaxed for your wedding celebration, consider a Hawaiian wedding theme. You can surprise your guests with authentic Hawaiian entertainment or be a little more understated and choose to simply have a wonderful Hawaiian menu including fresh tropical fruits, roasted meats and tropical drinks. Your Hawaiian wedding theme is the perfect opportunity to show your personalities and create an evening to remember for both you and your guests.

Wedding in Chicago – Winter Wonderland

Following her mother’s urging, 25-year-old Caroline Cirrincione took a chance and wore a distinctive blue, white and black oversized shirt to an evening with her friends at Rino Lounge in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. That night, she not only caught the eye of a photographer working for the Red Eye, a publication that would poke fun of self-described “cute, but different” shirt in a future issue, but also of the man to whom she would be pledging the rest of her life just two years later.

Luke Eimerman, a 29-year-old sales manager for medical supply company Hollister Inc., was a friend of a friend also attending the Ferrari party going on that night. “A couple days later he asked me out and then we were dating all of a sudden,” Caroline says as a light blush spreads across her cheeks.

The following year passed quickly for the sweethearts, and the day after Thanksgiving Luke surprised Caroline with a romantic horse and carriage ride down Michigan Avenue. She was even more astounded when he got down on one knee and pulled the hidden engagement ring out of his coat.  ”I had no idea, and everyone already knew!” Caroline says, noting that Luke had asked her father, Tom, for his blessings beforehand.

“I actually had the carriage take us to the restaurant where we had our first date,” Luke says.  When they arrived at Flatwater on North Clark, both sets of parents were already waiting for them, and the wedding planning began right away.

Caroline’s family has been in the restaurant business for 35 years and owns a number of restaurants and banquet halls in the Chicago area. They have been hosting elaborate receptions for a long time, so there was no one better to trust with planning the big day than her own mom and sister.

Working with two people so near and dear to her heart, mom Cathy and sister Jodi, who was also the Maid of Honor, the process was at times an emotional roller coaster for Caroline, but it was always a lot of fun. “There were bonding experiences when we’d go downtown and try on the dresses,” she says. “As the day got closer we’d go every month, and then every week.”

The final result was well worth the effort. The December 6th wedding began with a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Patrick’s Church in Lake Forest. “I’ve been going there since we moved to Lake Forest when I was five, so there was no question about that,” Caroline says. The interior was tastefully decorated with a white isle runner from Customized Wedding Creations, embroidered with the happy couple’s initials, and complemented by arrangements of white hydrangeas, roses, lilies, and dendrobium orchids done by Yanni Design Studio.

The bride wore a Reem Acra strapless gown from Belle Vie Bridal Couture, sprinkled with beading on the bodice and draping down gracefully into a long train. “I didn’t even like it on the hanger,” she says, “But then I tried it on and I was obsessed with it!”

The groom had tears in his eyes as he watched his soon-to-be wife walk down the aisle. “I thought that I was going to be able to compose myself very well, but seeing her in her dress for the first time as she turned the corner was very emotional,” Luke says. “The whole night was unbelievable, but I’ll never forget that moment.”

A forty-five minute drive took the party to the Belvedere Events & Banquets in Elk Grove Village, one of two banquet halls owned and operated by the Cirrincione family, where dim candlelight and floor-to-ceiling ivory drapery, also masterminded by Yanni, expertly transformed the modern venue into the romantic winter wonderland envisioned by the couple. BBJ Linens added sparkling touches with their beautifully unique, gold fantasia linens and silver bichon napkins.

A monogrammed light featuring the couple’s initials shown down on the white-covered dance floor, and 350 guests watched them complete turns in perfect harmony to Lionel Richie’s “My Love”.  ”During the first dance we had a confetti drop – which was amazing,” Catherine says. “That was probably the best moment.” No one could have guessed that the couple had ducked out of their dancing lessons after just the second one.

A fabric wall separated cocktail hour from the main event, and catering was done in-house, with a cake from Rolf’s Patisserie in Lincolnwood. Orchestra 33 provided music for the reception, later passing the baton to Fig Media, who played current, upbeat songs during the after party. “The cocktail hour room was converted into the after party room,” Caroline said. “We were up until four in the morning dancing the night away.” The whole event was documented by Pictures4ever Studio, Belvedere Events & Banquet’s frequent photographers, and each guest left with a rhinestone candleholder, another of mom’s great ideas.

“I was so excited, I was on cloud nine,” Caroline says, adding that the only problem with the whole day was that it was over so soon. She woke up saying “Can we do that again?”

Hotels vs. serviced apartments: why serviced apartments make more sense for business trips

Serviced apartments offer all the same conveniences as a hotel – housekeeping, room service, recreational facilities and restaurants – without the whole tourist “experience”, with service that is in fact more in tune to business travelers’ needs.

Not only can the locations of serviced apartments match 5-star hotels, sometimes they are actually more convenient – away from touristy hot spots and closer to the CBD. Especially in business hubs like Singapore, Bangkok and Sydney, serviced apartments are an ever more appealing choice for the professional jet set and even their families.

Take Anantara Baan Rajprasong Serviced Suites, Bangkok. While conveniently off the beaten tourist path, all the best restaurants, nightlife and shopping are still within minutes by the BTS skytrain. With a swimming pool, gym, Jacuzzi, steam and sauna, Anantara Baan Rajprasong can already match luxury hotels in terms of offerings.

However, it’s the small things that make all the difference – a fully equipped kitchen with a washing machine as well, separate living and dining area boasting contemporary yet warm décor, large workspace with free WiFi and even a guest bathroom.

Guests can feel at home rather than on some grueling business trip. They can also indulge in longer term activities, such as cooking programs, golf lessons in the building’s state-of-the-art Wilding Golf center, and an array of holistic, contouring, anti-ageing and detox programs at Anantara Baan Rajprasong’s lifestyle spa.

But if, at the end of the day, it still comes down to one thing – price – that is in fact the icing on the cake: most serviced apartments offer discounted rates – the longer you stay, the better the price. Even for stays as short as three nights, the rates are surprisingly lower than hotels of similar standards. With the ever increasing number of serviced apartments on offer at premium locations, feel at home the next time you go away on business.
